On November 15, 2024, the community of Tigatto, Davao City, witnessed the official launch of a specialized training program focused on Backyard Red Tilapia Production, organized by the Regional Training Center – Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center (RTC-Korphil). This event aims to support local residents and aspiring fish farmers in establishing small-scale, sustainable aquaculture systems within their own backyards, potentially providing both food security and income generation opportunities.
The training, led by Engr. Lougino A. Miguel, an expert in aquaculture from RTC-Korphil, introduces participants to essential practices in tilapia breeding, water quality management, and feed optimization. The program covers both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on sessions, ensuring participants gain a comprehensive understanding of tilapia farming that they can apply immediately within their households.
The launch event featured demonstrations of pond preparation, fish handling, and feeding techniques, giving participants insight into best practices for maximizing fish health and production. Engr. Miguel and his team also introduced affordable and low-maintenance setups suitable for small-scale farmers, showing how tilapia farming can be accessible to a broad range of participants.
