The Regional Training Center – Korea-Philippines Vocational Training Center Davao played host to a highly successful 2023 Davao City District Skills Competition from November 23-25,2023, attracting participants from 13 institutions. The event, featuring 31 competitors and 30 experts, showcased a diverse array of skills and talents.
Distinguished guests attending the competition included Davao City Councilors Hon. Al Ryan S. Alejandre (representing Mayor Sabastion Z. Duterte), Hon. Bai Hundra Cassandra Dominique “Sweet” N. Advincula, Mr. Sherwin B. Manual, Chief of Staff of Congressman Vincent J. Garcia, and Ms. Cherilyn Casuga, President of the Association of Private TechVoc Institutions.
Over the course of the three-day event, participants engaged in competition across 20 skills areas, some reflecting the diverse trades offered by the Training Center. These areas ranged from Automobile Technology, Bakery, Carpentry, Cooking, and Electrical Installation to Fashion Technology, Floristry, Graphic Design Technology, Hairdressing, and Hotel Reception. Additional categories included Information Network Cabling, IT Software Solution for Business, Mechatronics, Patisserie and Confectionery, Plumbing and Heating, Mechanical CAD, Refrigeration and Airconditioning, Restaurant Services, Wall and Floor Tiling, and Welding.
RTC-KPVTC Davao emerged triumphant, securing an impressive tally of 14 gold medals and 1 silver medal, showcasing the institution’s commitment to excellence and the cultivation of skilled professionals.
Looking ahead, the Regional Skills Competition scheduled for December 5-7, 2023, will see RTC-KPVTC Davao participating in 14 skills areas, setting the stage for even more achievements on a regional level.
Adding a surprise element to the event, TESDA Director General Secretary Suharto “Teng” T. Mangudadatu, Ph.D., made an unexpected visit from Davao de Oro via helicopter. During the second day of the competition, he toured some skills areas, providing a firsthand perspective of the participants’ remarkable talents.
In his address, Director General Secretary Mangudadatu outlined TESDA’s forward-looking plans and offered insights and inspiration to the participants. He emphasized the pivotal role of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in today’s workforce, underscoring the importance of cultivating skills that align with the evolving demands of the job market.
The 2023 Davao City District Skills Competition not only celebrated the skills and dedication of the participants but also highlighted the commitment of TESDA and the Regional Training Center in nurturing a workforce equipped for the challenges of the future. The event served as a platform to recognize and promote excellence in technical and vocational education, contributing to the overall development of skilled professionals in the region.
